When I’m at school, I embrace the basic bitch lifestyle and all it comes with – including guzzling Starbucks like holy water and the mountain of leggings. But once summer rolls around and I am reunited with my trendier friends I leave my leggings and Hunters in favour of some more fashion forward and put-together looks. While I’m not the trendiest dresser, I have found some pieces that help elevate your style from basic bitch to lowkey fashionista.

Put down the Lululemon cause culottes are the new legging. They come in just as many colours as your collection of leggings but are practical for the summer heat. For someone more accustomed to the fit of leggings, I opted for a slightly longer and slimmer legged culotte. Throw them on with any of your basic tank tops to help streamline and polish your look. My current favourite is the Lalemant Pant from Wilfred.

Although it can be blazing hot in the day, as soon as the sun sets it can get a little chilly. Even though the basic girl in you is cheering for the flannel you can throw on, try a bomber jacket instead. It can really add a cool factor to any plain outfit underneath. Zara currently has a huge selection ranging different colours to different fun prints.

The trendiest way to stay cool this summer is to show a little shoulder. Off the shoulder tops are flirty and fun. Available in various colours, prints, and silhouettes there are endless options in terms of outfits. Pair a tighter one with a skirt for a night out as a nod to giving ’em the cold shoulder!

If you’re tired of wasting time tucking your top into your shorts or skirt, try a bodysuit. Not only do they help avoid weird wrinkles but they also help to streamline everything. I’ve been living in my black bodysuit ever since I got it early summer. Making a comeback this year are one-pieces. Although I haven’t worn one since I was a kid I’m definitely embracing this trend. They’re great for when that #summerbod isn’t quite summer ready.

Trade in your Birkenstocks and Havianas for a sleeker shoe. They’re still easy to slip on and comfy for walking but keep you on-trend. Mules are great for adding height or completing any nighttime outfit while slip-ons are great for daytime adventures.

Your Tiffany necklace won’t be alone anymore and can now share the spotlight with a slew of chokers. Although they sit higher on the neck than a normal necklace, they’re still easy to layer and are a great way to accessorize and complete any outfit.
